CROP POLLINATION

The pollination of flowers is vital, both for our food supply and for biodiversity. Bees are the ones in charge of this mission.

GUARDIANES DE LA BIODIVERSIDAD

The worldwide production of food and the world’s biodiversity depend to a large extent on pollination. Pollination consists of a natural process that allows flowers to fertilise and produce fruit and seeds. Bees and other insects such as butterflies and bumblebees, are of the utmost importance in this process.

At LAPUELA Honey we cooperate with apple or kiwi producers in the pollination of their crops, in order to produce better quality fruit.

Our role as beekeepers is of extreme importance in the fight against the extinction of bees. As guardians of the terrestrial ecosystem, at LAPUELA Honey we contribute to pollination. How? By placing our hives in areas where biodiversity is threatened by multiple factors.

WHAT TYPE OF CROPS ARE POLLINATED?

Apples, kiwis and cranberries are crops that depend on insect pollination. These three fruit trees are of special importance in Asturias.

The apple is a fruit with a large tradition in this region, with some 24,710 acres dedicated to its cultivation, and its production is intimately linked to cider, a signature product in Asturias.

Kiwi and cranberry are a more recent venture, but both are steadily growing and have good future prospects.
